iOS app development: your iPhone and iPad app, from idea to App Store

iOS app development starts with your idea and often stalls on who will build it. You cannot build it yourself, and you do not know what it costs or what comes after launch. So a good idea stays on the shelf.

You get an app for iPhone and iPad, submitted to the App Store. You work with someone who runs eleven apps of his own, which you can open now.

You get a proposal with the price first. Only then do you decide.

Does this sound familiar?

  • There is an idea for an app, but who is going to build it?
  • What does an app actually cost, and what does that amount depend on?
  • I am afraid of a quote full of jargon that I cannot read.
  • Say the app exists. How does it get into the App Store, and who finds it there?

Having an app developed: what you get

What your app can do depends on your idea. This is what you get in any case. Where there is a limit, it is stated.

What you get What it does for you
An app for iPhone and iPad Your app runs on iPhone and iPad, not on Android. So you know up front which devices it will run on.
Your idea worked out into screens and features You say what the app should do and get, in writing, which screens and features that takes, in plain language. That way you see what will be built before the building starts.
A version to try yourself You try the app on your own iPhone before it goes into the App Store. You say what you want changed.
Your app in the App Store I handle the submission to Apple, with the text and the screenshots for your app’s page. Whether and when it is approved is up to Apple.
Payment in the app, if you want it If you want to charge for your app, it gets a subscription or a paywall. I work with those in my own apps too. Nobody can promise you in advance that users will pay for it.
One point of contact from start to finish The person you speak to also builds your app. There is no salesperson or project manager in between, so your question goes straight to the builder.

How to check who makes your app: eleven apps of my own

What this gives you: you can open the apps below now, download them free of charge and see for yourself how they work. They are not client apps, but apps I build or acquire and run myself. All eleven are in the App Store with Toss it Online as the seller.

  • What your app is built with

Your app is built in Swift (SwiftUI) or React Native, two ways of programming an app. My own apps are built in the same two.

  • Subscriptions and paywalls

A subscription or paywall in your app is built by someone who works with them in his own apps.

  • Getting found in the App Store

If you later want people to find your app, you have someone who does that work for his own apps: keywords, screenshots, custom product pages, tests of those pages and advertising with Apple (Apple Ads).

Having an app built: how it works, and what it asks of you

You do not need to be able to program. You bring three things: your idea, the content that goes into the app, and time to try it.

  1. You share your idea

A few sentences are enough: what should the app do, and for whom? A worked-out plan is not needed.

  2. You hear what is possible, and what is not

You get a few questions: what should the app be able to do first, and what can wait? If your idea does not fit iPhone and iPad, or I cannot build it, you will hear that before there is a proposal.

  3. You get a proposal

In writing: what the first version can do, what you need to supply, what it costs and what you can expect after the launch. Only then do you decide.

  4. You try your app yourself

While your app is being built, you try it on your own iPhone and say what you want changed. That happens before it goes to Apple.

  5. Your app goes into the App Store

Your app is submitted to Apple; Apple does the review itself. If you want to find new users after that, that is a separate job.

What does iOS app development cost?

The price is on request: you get it in a proposal, and only then do you decide. An amount on this page would be a guess, because two apps that look alike can be very different to build.

What the price of an app depends on

This makes it cheaper

  • One thing the app has to do well
  • Everything happens on the device itself
  • For iPhone only
  • You supply the copy, the images and a logo
  • An app without payments
  • One language

This makes it more expensive

  • Many features in the first version
  • Users log in and share data with each other
  • A layout of its own for iPad as well
  • The copy is written for you and the style still has to be chosen
  • Subscriptions or purchases in the app
  • Several languages

Do you already have a quote from someone else? See which points from the list “This makes it more expensive” are in it. That is where the difference in price lies.

If you want to keep the price low, start with the one thing the app has to do well. The rest can come in a later version.

If you want to find users after the launch, there is more work: the App Store page, keywords, possibly Apple Ads. That is not part of the build price; you can have it done separately.

Questions about iOS app development

What do you have to supply yourself when you have an app built?

Your idea, as specific as you can make it: who is the app for, and what should someone be able to do with it? Then the content that goes into it, such as copy, images or data, and a name and a logo if you have them.

While the app is being built it takes your time: you try the app and say what you want changed. You do not need technical knowledge.

Will there be an Android version as well?

No. What you get here is iOS app development, for iPhone and iPad. I do not build an Android version, and you would rather hear that now than halfway through.

How long does it take to have an app built?

That depends on what your app has to do and on how quickly you can try it and respond. That is why no fixed timescale is given here. The proposal contains a schedule for your app.

After that Apple reviews your app. How long that takes is up to Apple.

Can I not just make an app myself with AI or an app builder?

You can try. A chatbot or an app builder produces screens and code, but does not know what your user needs. And an app still has to pass Apple’s review afterwards.

AI is used for your app too, as a tool for writing and building. I check what comes out of it myself before you get it.

Do people find an app by themselves once it is in the App Store?

No. Your app can then be downloaded, but being found takes work on the App Store page, on keywords and sometimes on Apple Ads.

You can have that work done too, as a separate job, by someone who does it for his own apps. You get no promise of downloads or revenue: nobody can give one.

Can the app earn money with a subscription?

Yes, technically: your app then gets a subscription or a paywall, as in my own apps. Whether people pay for it depends on your idea and your users. Nobody can promise you that in advance.

A few sentences are enough: who is the app for, and what should it do? I read your message myself and you get a reply by e-mail. You can also call.
